From oil dependence to local resilience

Gidday

The price of food is a popular conversation topic over increasingly meagre portions.

What have the different groups been up to around getting local food resilience going?

There is a peak oil group in Hampden. Go to www.transitiontowns.org.nz and find it under the groups. I think it is just a phone number. They are the NZ leaders in peak oil awareness. Also there is lot of information there in the minutes of various meetings. Perhaps someone should summarise them for this topic of food. Also you can do a search on this ning site on garden, or food and find more here. I also think we need to set up a national interest free currency so that we can trade produce within NZ. Rice, avocadoes, citrus, with all those wonderful apricots and fruit from your area. Just for things which don't grow so well. A luxury of course but your cherries are terrific. Or do we all have to eat completely local? The issue will be wheat and corn and barley growing though so we are not dependent on imports. I wonder about all those wonderful products you can get at Ceres or Chantal organic distributors. So much is imported.
Vaughn,
Your greengrocer website does not seem to work.
If you're still interested in the food co-op idea, you can contact me at senorjoel@gmail.com.
I live at Earthsong (Waitakere) and we have a small, growing co-op here. There is also one in Opotiki: http://www.transitiontowns.org.nz/node/451. Taupo has Volcanic Organics, which they don't call a "co-op" but it essentially functions as one. Still looking for others; I'd like to have an NZ co-op gathering in the next year or so.
