From oil dependence to local resilience

The headline "Vast Crude finds excite the oil trade" 300 km off the coast of Brazil (Sept 12) gives the impression that our oil worries may be over. Go the PR companies!

When and if oil is eventually recovered, this Guara field will produce enough oil for 23 days supply for the world. But it is seven kilometres under the sea and very costly to extract.

Now that the easy to exploit oil is in decline, oil companies must find it in inhospitable places. This Brazilian company must be hoping the price of oil will be high enough by the time it is produced to make the risky venture profitable.
