A powerpoint on community currencies I delivered to the Museum of Wellington Aug 20 2009

Hope this can be useful to some people. It was well received.

Thank you, Deirdre.

I wonder why you are suggesting a bought currency for the Wellington region rather than a mutual credit system.

It seems people latch onto bought currencies more readily. Over three or four years, the whole local population is not only familiar with the bought currency but putting thought into the meaning of currency localisation. As a consequence of this prep period, a community may be more willing to consider mutual credit clearing and further free itself of the national currency.

Is this your thinking with respect to Wellington?
I have recommended this because Germany found that their Chiemgauer type currencies were serving a population which was in the hundreds of thousands. And I think anything that isn't dependent on the web means that those who aren't connected or are not sure how well they can use the web are easily able to comprehend a bought currency. Besides these days you can have vouchers as well as magnetic swipe cards and we are used to that rather than recording every transaction on the web.

My only concern is about what would happen with inflation or deflation of the national currency. I think Auckland should have a bought currency of their own too and also the south island.
Awesome presentation Deirdre!!!

Thank you for all that you are doing to empower local communities creating local economy/community currencies.

I will keep an eye on your page and am interested to keep abreast of your activities.
I suppose the thing I want to know when comparing options is, "Which one is going to make a real difference to people's entrapment in debt?" Bought currencies mean that you have to have the wherewithal to buy them with in the first place.
Not sure that I can keep abreast of my own activities either..Glad you liked the presentation.
