From oil dependence to local resilience

talking of mouse/rat trap design, i was feeding our horses and left an empty bucket bar a few grains hanging on the fence. Heavy rain fell during the night and yup, 1/4 full with a floating body. Easiest rat trap on the globe.

Poor Rat!
Have some compassion.
yeah i do pity the rat, and i don't know how long the poor thing paddled to stay afloat, but it was an accident. It's also not the rat's fault that its ancestors thrived to the point that our native bird populations have suffered. You can pity any animal (incl humans) and not control or kill anything and let god/the universe decide who survives. The reason why you and I are here today is because humans have survived. If the rats were eating your children's food in a survival situation, would you let the rats eat instead of your kids?
No -I wouldn't let the rats eat instead of the kids - I would eat the rats!
But I wouldn't just let them paddle for a long time and then laugh about it.
I have no qualms eating animals if I am hungry - but a short whack is kinder than laughing about an animal in pain and distress.
Just mtc worth on the subject.
