New Zealand Transition Initiatives Social Network

From oil dependence to local resilience

So it looks like Ning is officially going to shut out free users. I'm bummed since I spent the last six months evangelising Ning to local neighbourhood groups. I thought Ning had some grassroots cred - I guess I was wrong. I'm going to be looking for a new social network host. What will everyone else here do? What other community-friendly SN options exist with event calendars?

Have you checked out this one: http://wackwall.com/ ?
Perhaps it is worth investigating a more dynamic and complete use of the organic groups on the TransitionTowns.org.nz website?

Groups could be opened up for users to make their own like they are here and activation of personal messaging systems too etc. I think this discussion has come up in the past but I was not a part of it. It may be going nowhere for technical reasons but I thought it worth putting out here.

I am about to look into reactivating the organic groups on the TTdevonport.org.nz site. We had initially with the more rigid system (like transitiontowns.org.nz) for our workgroups but we are looking to use it in a more freeform manner like Ning. If it does prove a success then perhaps it will help use keep the community tighter by running it all from one site.
I'm not a regular using of this site, but I find it interesting that just because something that (assuming) has been useful for people, suddenly gets written off because it is no longer free.

The market is quite good in that way- boom... instant consciousness.
