From oil dependence to local resilience

Hi all,
you've probably seen the article in the Press today. If not, here is the link:

- the Google map itself
- http://www.facebook.com/pages/Otautahi-Urban-Foraging/136897606208?... (the Facebook Page)

cheers,
Christoph

The map is centred onto the US - you need to focus on Christchurch, NZ to see the resources
Very cool stuff, Christoph. Can I ask about the methodology of creating the map? Transition Motueka is looking at doing something similar, a food map essentially. Although we're a largely rural area, so it would be growers more than urban foraging. Still, I'd be very interested in hearing how this map came about.

Thanks,
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
I haven't been involved in bringing this about. Maybe check out the Facebook page, it would probably have been set up by the originators of the project! The map itself is a simple Google map that can be set up by anyone without any specific authorisation or monetary investment.
cheers,
Christoph
I think this is a caching issue with google maps, a few people have complained about this, most people however it's not an issue as the map automatically centers on Chch. I have looked for a fix but nothing so far. Just out of curiousity when you look at the same map which is embedded on our site (http://urbanforaging.manukadesign.co.nz/index.php/foraging-map/) does it center in the right place? I wondering as I haven't had any complaints reagrding that verion of the map.

Thanks,
Kerry
Hi Jeff,

I was the person who originally made the Otautahi map. It's simply a Google map and is pretty straight forward to set up and administer. if you want to get in touch with me to find out more my email addy is: kerry (at) manukadesign.co.nz also we have set up a temporary website at urbanforaging@manukadesign.co.nz if you or anyone else sets a map up drop us a line and well put a link up.

Kerry
Hi Kerry,
this map does seem to come up properly centred on Christchurch ...
Christoph
nice!!
Hey Christoph

This is great. I love your map pointing people in the direction of different types of wild food. I'm interested in the quote "I belong to a community of people who, for many years, has shared resources such as food and other resources through pot lucks, sharing preserves, passing on surplus produce, teaching one another new skills."

Do you think there have been skills that have been lost - ie in how to use pine cones, etc and make the most of the natural abundance that is around us? Are you working on this side of things as well?

You may well have seen the website of a group in Sheffield, UK, called Abundance, if not it might be quite inspiring. They harvest mainly apples from everyones trees and process them into various products which are then distributed to children's centres, homeless shelters, etc. They have produced an Abundance handbook. There is also another group that have produced a Sheffield Green Food Map. http://www.sheffieldfoodnetwork.org/
