From oil dependence to local resilience

Hi..just joined and keen to connect wihth others.

We are a family who are intending to leave the city behind and head rural in the next 12-18 months. We would like to form an intentional community with other like minded people in the Canterbury area.

Anyone working on a similar project or keen to get in at ground level on planning one?

Cheers

Kia ora Anna and family
I'd like to talk with you. I've been keen on the same idea in the past and have had varying degrees of involvement in several projects, rural and urban, and learnt a bit in the process. Right now, because of work and family commitments I'm less inclined to the rural option and more interested in involvement in transitioning metropolitan and small rural communities. None-the-less, I'd like to check-out your proposal and, if you want, share observations/experience that could help you guys.

Thanks for your reply Rex and I will make contact again soon via email.

Kind of amazed that there has been no other responses to this post.

We are very keen to connect with people that are wanting to go rural and live in a community based situation. We feel a good number would be 6 families (or 12 adults and children) and singles, couples welcome with age not an issue. At this stage we potentially have 4 adults and 4 children.

We are in the early planning stages of looking at council restrictions etc with a view to looking at land soon.

Also keen to talk to others who have been involved in similar projects in other parts of the country.

Keywords: intentional community, co housing, eco village, self sufficient, eco friendly, Canterbury

Anna Are you the same Anna I have emailed just this evening?

I would be keen to get in touch after reading this 'discussion'.

Gricklegrass is an intentional community based in Oxford. It is apart of the Heartwood Community that also has 2 properties that are next to each other in Christchurch city.

I am typing purely from a Grickle view point here. Here at Gricklegrass there are 7 rooms (most of the bed rooms have mezzanine floors so more like 1.5-2 rooms in one) in total and another 1-2 that require major work before living in can happen. We inhabit 2 of these rooms at the moment. So with commitment and agreement we could, imho, house up to 2 families depending on family sizes and requirements. There is one bathroom, sep toilet, an out door toilet, an outdoor bath and sauna. There is a good sized kitchen and lounge and dining room that has had much work done on it recently.

At this stage it looks like we will be milking a cow (or more) for our own milk, we are interested in making cheeses, preserving fruits and veges, putting in gardens for us at Grickle and to supply the Heartwood community. We as a couple are committed to a high level of self sustainability and community living.

Please give us a call on the phone number I emailed and we can go from there!

Peace

Meaghan.

hi Anna
just found this website last night...thinking of finding like minded people around chch...Since the replies are written over a time period of 2! years, I am wondering where you all up to at this stage, means July 10...

For the past 10 years , particularly around 01/02 we were trying to find communities where we could fit in...well, there were none as far as my research went. So hopefully we have enough people around soon, who like us joined the transition town movement and maybe want to live closer together, as families. We are about to put an offer in for a piece of land 1.2ha, which is subdividable, I know not exactly the 'free spirited ' minded peoples idea, but I am older and wiser these days, so would love to be neighbours and not nessecarily co-owners with great families.
Anybody interested to be a part of our idea, buy a large section, build their eco house, be a part of , maybe 5,6 families who could be of help to each other as neighbours, friends, kids, gardening ( I am vegetable self sufficient these days, for our 4 headed family) and very much involved in our community 'get growing' movment. and so one...

Would love to hear from your project, where you are, how it goes.

with kind regards Franziska

We've been slowly working on plans for forming a community in rural Canterbury.

We think we may have come across the perfect piece of land west of ChCh (approx 1 hour) and are now looking for people who are interested in living in a self supporting intentional community who are also financially able to contribute.

Unfortunately $$ are an essential part of the process at the beginning in both buying the land and building the house and portable units we are planning on and we would like to talk to anyone initially who does have funds to invest. There will be opportunity for those without to be involved once we have purchased and started the rest of the plans in motion.

I'd love to hear from interested people. families or individuals. communitycanterbury@hotmail.com

hi anna

since my last email we have found our perfect piece of land...just around the corner. and we had a great gathering just last saturday. as the possesion day was last Friday.

Unfortunately we won't be a part of your community, unfortunatley but we also will work towards a small co-housing community here in Diamond Harbour, living space for around 4-5 families.

If anybody is interested let me know.

But all the best for your approach and starting up. Please stay in touch over the next few years, it will be interesting to see us developing similar land ideas. And giving each other infor and hints?

good luck.

with kind regards franziska
Hi Franciska

Would like to keep in touch on this one :)

Thanks and congrats for your purchase!

Anna
An update :)

This morning we purchased, at a very heated auction, 7.3 beautiful hectares in the small community of Whitecliffs in Canterbury (about 50 mins from Christchurch) We're over the moon to find a property that ticked all the boxes for us in an area we love.

There are 3 investors and all going to plan we will begin to establish our community at the end of 2011 because of business commitments by us all.

We will be looking in the future at extending our community and inviting more people to be part of it once the infrastructure is in place...so stay tuned for any updates :)
