It seems a very interesting project to do. It doesn't seems that we can leverage existing open source project like Magento, as here the user upload their products, and all is around the sellers and buyers, it is much closer to a model like 'trademe'.

The other alternative would be to do a development, I have experience with LAMP (PHP/MYSQL/APACHE), using a framework like Zend or Symphony. It would be an interesting project, that potentially can be reused.

However, I just joined to this group and I don't have idea how a project like this can become a reality :)

Maybe it could be part of a community seed library

http://www.koanga.org.nz/seeds could be a place to start?

Yes, the people from Koanga institute does a great job in saving seeds. And it seems that is quite a few and intersting alternatives. From a site to offer. buy and exchange seeds to a seed library, or a 'hybrid' between these models.

Probably the first is to see where is the need :)

Or is that a demand and people to run it?

I do see this as just another part of Collaborative Consumption and will happen.

But I must admit while I love the idea I'm not in position to help out at this stage; at least in regard to hands on.

Collaborative Consumption , I really like that .
