From oil dependence to local resilience

I've been in touch With Kathleen Gallagher, maker of the film Earth Whisperers who said she’d be interested in contributing in some way to the making of a NZ film on community currency – possibly as a consultant.

I’ll introduce the people who have so far indicated their interest in this topic to one another via email, after which I suggest that further discussions take place via this forum.

Is someone able to add all the relevant bits of conversation that have gone on so far in the LE list?
Having a few teething problems getting into this! Hope this lands in the right place.
Here is my contribution so far:
The start of an outline:
(a) Impact of cash on a cashless society:
Approaching someone like Ranganui Walker for an interview on the impact of cash on a cashless society – could lead into dialogue on “what is money” – I recently saw some good points made in the Money Fix DVD. Opportunity for volunteer interviewees!
(b) History of establishing banking in NZ
Deidre and her book Healthy Money Healthy Planet a good start. An interview.
(c) FR Banking – musical chairs; quantity and impact of money leaving the country; real economy versus casino/financial markets economy. How would you work all this stuff in?
Interviews: Diedre Kent; Jim Anderton in view of $11.7b lost offshore and establishing Kiwibank? David Tripe?
(d) Impact on mortgages for an “average family”; for a farmer; manufacturer.
Could do some graphs showing interest over average mortgage? I know Alasdair Thompson of the Employers and Manufacturers (Northern) Assoc is well acquainted with C H Douglas.
(e) Responses:
Historical? Social Credit
Now: Kiwibank; Time Banking; green dollars; material from the workshops on the proposal currency (I attended Caterton’s).
Interview Margaret and …
(f) Impact on environment
Globally off shore? Exporting ..(what’s the term?) Could we draw on thestoryofstuff content for some brief animated explanation.
Here in NZ.
(g) How would the “conventional” or accepted view of the economy fir in – if at all?
What priority or time would be dedicated to segments. This is where the knowledge of the group will be vital.
Funding:
Trying to get funding from the Film Commission, TVNZ, TV 3, is laborious and without guarantee of success. Speaking to Kathleen would be great.
* I gather Bryan Gould is on the Board of Directors for TVNZ. This might be useful if we approach for funding and I suspect he would have some input too? Would that be an issue because he’s a Director?
* When you use professional sound and film crew the cost escalates. You get the quality but you pay the price. If only I knew Santa Claus.
* Would a film school student be interested in becoming involved once we’d established what we were trying to achieve?
Audience or distribution:
Are we aiming at:
TV style one hour doco (which is probably 45 mins in reality)?
Or something for a film festival?
Or to be released online Youtube?
Circulated on DVD?
Sue
Thanks for putting that there Sue.
I think it is important to get clear what we want to achieve by having such a movie, so that will influence the content as well.
Who are we wanting to watch this film, what are we wanting people to do once they have seen it etc.
How will we use the movie? For instance in the Earth Whisperers film it is divided into the various people interviewed - they all link beautifully, but this makes it possible to show just one section and that is complete in itself. I like that aspect and I could imagine that making the film very usable.
So answering my own questions...
I want ordinary people to get an understanding of how the system has been working and get fired up as a result to becoming involved in the issue. Not so worried about getting to the big guns as I think many have too many agendas to be able to shift their present viewpoints.
I would use sections of a movie to illustrate various points for example if you were talking about Time Banking and how it works - I'd use that section. Similarly if I wanted to explain how our money is created - play a section on that.
But it would be fantastic if it got into the doc film festival.
As an aside, it would be good if you are looking at Time Banking - to yes, interview me, but I think hearing/seeing some local stories of the Lyttelton Time Bank would clinch the audience. For example Joan who is probably in her 70s spending time with my daughter Jill who has Down Syndrome teaching her how to bake scones. Such a lovely trade - I see all sorts of multilayered things happening there. This sort of stuff gets people involved emotionally and that is what changes people!
Hi, you might want to make a posting on this at the Ning site, Intersect, as there are a fair number of other professional filmmakers who hang out there, also.
best,
Jay
