On World Environment Day June 5 we had first Transition event in Kaitaia.
The evening was a great success with about 35 people in attendance to watch
a short film on Peak Oil and to hear Nandor Tanchos give a talk about future scenarios.

Following Nandor I gave a presentation on Transition Towns. The meeting ended with a clear direction of investigating the TT model further.

On the 25th of June we held our 2nd meeting and had about 25 people show up. (Not a bad effort as it was a very cold and stormy evening). We watched Robert Newman's very funny "History of Oil" and then did some Open Space work on "where to from here".

By the end of the night a steering group had been formed and the beginnings of a carpool network had been devised.

Next meeting is at the Te Rarawa Offices South Rd Kaitaia on the 10th July 7:00pm.

Hello Northeners. The photo is my son with a 'friendly crab'. I am interested in the possibility of a carpooling scheme/information matrix? It seems often that we have a nearly empty car travelling south. Does anyone know of such an exchange happening or would like to think about it with me? I like the idea from John of using local media to help us connect.

Hi Folks - its 2009 and time to face the challenges ahead - I suspect the present low oil prices are a temporary diversion which will make it more difficult in the short term to get our message out there, but there is lots of good stuff happening and I think we need to be making more use of the media to connect with our community.
Next meeting is 12th Jan - see y'all there Cheers, John K

Kia Ora Christine, you're in! We just have to get everyone else on to this now... and then us all onto the .org site... Our whanau looks forward to the days of the horse coming back too Catherine - I used to ride to work in the late 70s and also used my horse for ploughing, harrowing etc. Requires a bit of slowing down though! Also sea travel/transport here in the Far North - that's how most goods were transported not so very long ago and could be the way again.

Rongo, That's a good quote you found! That's why I'd like our whanau or community to have some horses. Might be the way to go in the not too distant future.

Just found this quote by an Arab which indicates that they certainly know of Peak Oil: "My grandfather rode a camel, my father drives a Mercedes, my son will ride a camel."

Eeek! Can anyone tell me how we can upload documents to this website, so we can start building a archive of key documents (I was going to ask our Communications Group if we post our meeting notes on here for everyone to see).
