Signs of Change Conference at Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin.

November 12, 2010 to November 13, 2010
The organizers of this Signs of Change conference are seeking contributions from a wide range of society:engineers, scientists, business people, council workers, educators, students, transition town members … Theconference does not seek to discuss “what we should do” or “what we could do”, but rather will be a show-casefor examples of fundamental change that has been happening. Our perceptions and expectations of the futureare shaped by our experiences. If we can see and hear about sings of…See More

I found out about Transition Towns...
From a friend who told me
In the context of Transition Towns my interests / passions are:
I have had a busy schedule the last few years in my role as teacher. Many communities and organisations around NZ have invited me to talk to them about climate change, peak oil, transportation, energy. My day job is to teach young people the knowledge and skills of Mechanical Engineering, in particular Energy Engineering, Project Management, and Thermodynamics. You could look at things 2 ways, (1) we're in the mess we are now because of the un-constrained deployment of science and engineering or (2) the greatest advances in wellbeing have been results of science and engineering. If you go with (1) then the logical response would be to abandon science and engineering and work to transition to a pre-industrial pattern of life. If you go with (2) then it's clear that you need to transition your engineering as a way to transition your communities. So - that's what I do research on. Developing the new problem definitions, requirements, modelling and methods to leverage the amazing capabilities of science and engineering to facilitate the transition.
What are you happy to share about yourself:
4th generation native of Colorado, USA. I grew up 3 miles outside of a village of 800 people in the remote southwestern mountains. Try to find Mancos, Colorado on Google Earth! 18 of the 28 people I graduated with from high school started kindergarten together. I learned many lessons about community in my 17 years there. One of those lessons is that isolation, low incomes, poverty and organic gardening (which we had plenty of just to have food) don't make a working community. Most of the people in my village were connected through church, interest in the high school sports, weather, survival. There was this connection that still exists and extends to my kids by right of residence. It went way beyond lifestyle choice. While I recognise the connections, I am not an idealist at all about "the simple life" in small communities. It is hard work for people to live together when they really have to interact and depend on each other for their living and wellbeing. I'm never really comfortable in a crowd or a big city still to this day. I hope to someday soon introduce myself to the people in all 70 of the homes that are on my street. It's easier to form a "community" with people who share ideas, but the people we live next to are right there, and it's time to build urban villages where they are, eh?

There are a good number of presentations with commentary on my website.

BS in Mech Eng (specialisation control systems), MS Mech Eng (specialisation energy systems), PhD Mech Eng (specialisation advanced materials for energy systems)
Experience in solar, wind, biofuel, building energy management, energy auditing, Geothermal, demand side management, transport.

IET National Prestige Lecture 2010 - Transition Engineering

I was very honoured to be selected as the Institute of Engineering and Technology Prestige Lecturer for 2010. I travelled the country giving the lecture and gathered the energy to go forward with my conference idea. You can watch the Wellington lecture at this site:

Hi Susan. I was trying to finf a way to stream some parts of the conference to Alexandra. We have Thyme Festival here that week. Our Making a Difference for Central Otago (MAD4CO) group are keen to listen in. We are a diverse group involved with different aspects of sustainability. We like the concept of the conference. We look for markers in our work. We have videoconference facilities at our council chambers - otherwise we have skype facilities at Central Stories, the location of our Thyme Festival. Cheers Clair Higginson

3 August looks fine for me. - Whom did you ask the question of? the people of Littelton? Did you want the expert opinion? Were you thinking we could organise the forum for you to end up with a group understanding and positive direction on energy? We could probably come up with something in that time frame. Have you had some good talks with Mik and Kerry to explain your group's history and background and transition so far? We'll need to know this.

Cheers,

Susan

Hi, I'll go over stuff with Mik and Kerry. They may also bring along another PhD student, Stacy, who also wants to become a Transition Engineer. I don't know how my schedule is for that date, but will look into it.

Cheers

Hi Susan,

I am hearing the praises of your work from all directions! Our group at Project Lyttelton is addressing TT issues. In particular with Mik Dale and Kerry Mulligan we are having a public forum Sunday 3 August from 1.00 - 5.00pm at the Rec Centre, Winchester St, Lyttelton. The question we've asked is...What needs to happen in regards to ENERGY MATTERS for Lyttelton and the Harbour Basin to become resilient and sustainable? Maybe you are able to come along?

Hi,

We're building up a new website if you want to visit. We've had over 7000 hits so far. www.aemslab.org.nz
There is still a lot of stuff I need to put up there, but it's a start.

Wow how lovely to have you there Susan. I heard you talk at the Association for the Study of Peak Oil seminar in Nelson last year. You will be a mine of information for us all and I hope you enjoy the community here online and the rapid development of the Transition Towns movement in NZ and worldwide.
