Understanding the money system and understanding the changes needed

Again and again I'm surprised about how little people care about the money system. Money is something so essential and central to our civilisation, yet almost nobody ever makes the effort to find out how it really works. When talking about the money system, I don't mean to talk about budgeting or investments or what we use money for. Of course money can be used for good, and often is. What I mean is the understanding of the money system as the central engine of our economy.

Money is… Continue

Money – why isn't there ever enough?

Our economy is drifting into increasingly difficult times. The media is full of headlines about failing finance companies and investment banks, rising food and fuel prices, unaffordable mortgages, high exchange rates and the 'credit crunch'. After months of assurances that the problem is over, it is getting worse. The American government is preparing to bail out the finance industry on Wall Street with a trillion dollars.

Alongside that, we also notice that the inequality between… Continue

No news = lots going on!

I just noticed that I haven't posted a blog post for almost two months. Well, I guess I have just been too busy.

Our local group, the Transition Initiative St Albans, has grown in the meantime from 3 people meeting to about 10 or more that are involved. We had a public meeting MP's and Community Board members attending. As a follow up we have created at least three subgroups: food security, walking and events. All of them… Continue

Last week I had another chance to be interviewed by Liz Griffiths for Earthwise on Plains FM, Christchurch.

You can either download the mp3 file by clicking on this link here or go to the website and listen to it online. It's the programme broadcast on 30 June.

Getting Transition Training into Schools

Jun 30, 2008

Positive News Issue (http://www.positivenews.org.uk/artman/publish/article_1773.shtml)

Marrianne Griffin has a vision to get Transition Town Training into mainstream education.

" I used to teach geography in secondary schools. I remember telling a class of 1980s geology 'O' level pupils that the Middle East had huge resources of oil yet limited resources of water, which would surely… Continue

Hi Christoph,
Thanks, have joined the google group. My interest is primarily as a property investor who's been made painfully aware (ironically on a property investment forum) that the end of the system we were relying on to create 'wealth' is nigh. Plus I'm a business owner looking for more sustainable options for our business: we import oil-based raw materials from Asia to produce sports equipment for people to buy with their disposable income and use in their recreation time along with other oil-based products - pick the holes in that! I also happen to live next door to Katie Nimmo and have been helping her start up the Woolston Community group, a.k.a. Roimata Roosters. But in general I just like numbers, despite feeling I'm not very good with them.
Cheers, Eli

Hi Christph, I´d be stoked to hear your thoughts on the role of tertiary education in coming decades as we move into the post industrial paradigms, and a possible gaia university campus in nz. Gracias, Grifen

Hi Christoph,
My main interest is applying Permaculture Design to plug the debt leak (or should I say torrent?) out of NZ to recirculate the energy back into our local economies.
There are already many inspiring examples in NZ and some very exciting projects on the Horizon.

Hi,

I live in Richmond, but not for much longer, I'm moving up to Auckland mid Jan, so I will see if there is one there I can join with. How are things going in Christchurch TT wise? Pegasus a prime example of what not to do!

Hi Christoph,

Just thought I had better update you as to what I'm up to at the moment.

I've actually moved to Motueka in Tasman to work in the orchards here, which explains why I haven't attended the meeting in August as planned. Apologies for not letting you know, but its one of the many things I am just catching up up on. Hope everything is going well with your St. Albans Transition Towns initiative.

Hi Christoph, It's got somewhat easier since we moved from Governors bay to Hunstbury Hill! However life is still frantically busy. What time of day is the event? I am tied up Tuesday evening.

But let's make a point of getting together sometime soon whatever happens!

Economics, and the core mechanism of economics - money - is an important motivator of behaviour. Transition Towns can only succeed with proper Transition Currencies!
