Giving Birth to a New Economy by a Managed Contraction
by Deirdre Kent, Laurence Boomert and Helen Dew.

27 May, 2009

Global economic recovery is not possible because economic growth has been fuelled by a cheap abundant energy supply, and this energy is now reaching the limits imposed by nature.

The world as a whole is either at or just past peak oil, the time when global oil production can no longer increase. Oil is a finite resource, half of it has gone, and we use six barrels of oi… Continue

Tom Greco on the inevitable end of the Central Banking and Political Money Regime

I recently posted two comments on a discussion because we have just lived through a most extraordinary week on the world's financial markets and I am struggling to make sense of it all and see the connection between the markets and peak oil.

So here is Tom's take on it. It is so good.

The Inevitable End of the Central Banking and Political Money Regime

The present disorder in the financial markets and the cascading failures of
financial institutions come as no surprise. Those who recog… Continue

Thoughts after a weekend away and then the movie 4

Went to a music weekend at a lodge near here. One would have thought that these people would be fairly au fait with peak oil issues but no so. (Not that I ventured into many conversations on the topic, I was too busy with the music.)

What I did notice was that many had gas guzzling vehicles. Then someone explained that he couldn’t afford to sell his gas guzzler because to replace it with a smaller car was going to cost so much. I heard that someone had envied the couple in the 80 sq m central c… Continue

Thoughts from the small farmers day at Otaki

A woman who sold fish waste and liquid blood and bone told me that her business is starting to thrive as chemical fertilisers get more expensive. I also talked to the assistant manager at our local Farmlands, asking what was happening. He told me of big price rises and the fact that their head office, where those decisions are being made, are making some changes to adjust. I suggested they stock more organic fertilisers but he said it was out of his hands. I passed him an invitation to our next… Continue

Thank you for the welcome Deirdre, I see you belong to the Otaki group, how cool... I spent the last 4 months of last year in Otaki and just loved it... yes the challenge is to start some community art projects but there are good people here with lots of enthusiasm and skills so if nothing else it'll be a fun undertaking!

Hi Deidre
Thanks for the welcome, good to know there is more than one of me. Will look forward to learning what all this is about. Sounds very interesting.

Hi Deidre, yes thanks for that.
The idea with www.mygarden.co.nz is to have a structured way for people to trade their home grown produce - people can put up something to trade and then others can make offers on that trade.

We're trying to get people to connect more with their neighbours. People can also list a profile of their home garden listing all the veggies etc they are growing and photos.

Regards

Carlin

Thanks for the welcome Deirdre! Yes a Timebank group would be most welcome. If anyone else out there is involved in starting one let me know. There are some attempts happening to try and connect these groups in a way we can easily share information and help each other with questions.

Thank you for your welcome,

No there is not a TT group here but I am a member of the Sumner Residents' Association committee that has given its support to my early suggestions towards at least establishing a community garden - we have struggled to find a suitable site yet, although the Sumner Primary School have expressed interest in being involved.

I am in the final stages of my studies at Lincoln University and would very much like to see Sumner become a part of the TT network. I plan to get stuck into getting this going over the summer.

Thanks,

Bailey

congratulations on your weekend meeting in Otaki. we have just launched the time bank last week. we have been using community weaver which i find is great. we have only been listing members so far. would love to talk to you and encourage you in what you are doing. I am just a newbie when it comes to computers etc. but i do have a skype account. my daughter will be over this week so will teach me how to load that onto my new laptop (thats if its not on it already). lol. we just got laptop yesterday so am still adjusting myself to using it instead of other computer at home. i will be in touch with you later in the week if thats okay with you. especially if you have skype account. makes it easier. you may know katie nimmo, well she started our community onto the idea of time banking. so we launched roimata time bank over the weekend. so we have lots to be grateful for for her. shes an amazing lady who does so much behind the scenes in our community!!! catch you later, sue stikkelman

Hi Deirdre,
I love your book. Thanks for all the work that went into it! I'm planning on launching a voucher system in Ashhurst. It's just in the initial stages, but a presentation to my group AAG--based almost entirely on your material--went over quite well.
I'm trying to iron out the details of the plan and there's a few things I haven't thought my way through yet, like the consequences of spending vouchers into circulation if the AAG promises to redeem vouchers at 90%. Do you mind if I phone you? Harvey Jones, who is working with me, gave me your number. Also, coincidentally, I'm traveling to Wellington for work on Monday and will be coming back through Otaki in the late afternoon; it's a huge ask but if I could trade you a coffee for a critique of my accounting I'd be in your debt forever.

Clothes swapping...I have so many items that I can no longer fit into after having two kids as well as books and kids toys etc that are no longer needed I just love the concept of making the most out of things and putting things back into circulation....becoming more sustainable....have you seen www.iswish.co.nz?
