We found that being informal didn't work. The minute you get money to manage it is important to be accountable and to have transparent processes for making decisions about how to use it. We took five months off to set ourselves up as a trust…

This is where you look for homes to exchange. Most of us are busy in our gardens and it is so much easier if when you are on holiday if you know that your garden is being watered, the produce is being harvested and the odd weed is coming out.

Why I won't be going to church this Christmas

Last Christmas I was in Christchurch staying with my well off son and his family. They have everything, big house, great jobs, five lovely healthy kids, bulging pantry and fridges and toys that pile up in corners. We all went to their Catholic church on Christmas Day. On the way in I noticed a little box which said I think "For the Poor". As the happy almost swinging service began I started to think of the gap between rich and poor and how it is widening all the time because of the destructive… Continue

This paper was written for Bryan Gould's think tank yesterday.

Giving Birth to a New Economy by a Managed Contraction

by Deirdre Kent, Laurence Boomert and Helen Dew.

Global economic recovery is not possible because economic growth has been fuelled by a cheap abundant energy supply, and this energy is now reaching the limits imposed by nature.

The world as a whole is either at or just past peak oil, the time when global oil production can no longer increase. Oil is a finite resource,… Continue

Tom Greco on the inevitable end of the Central Banking and Political Money Regime

I recently posted two comments on a discussion because we have just lived through a most extraordinary week on the world's financial markets and I am struggling to make sense of it all and see the connection between the markets and peak oil.

So here is Tom's take on it. It is so good.

The Inevitable End of the Central Banking and Political Money Regime

The present disorder in the financial markets and the cascading failures of

financial institutions… Continue

Thoughts after a weekend away and then the movie 4

Went to a music weekend at a lodge near here. One would have thought that these people would be fairly au fait with peak oil issues but no so. (Not that I ventured into many conversations on the topic, I was too busy with the music.)

What I did notice was that many had gas guzzling vehicles. Then someone explained that he couldn’t afford to sell his gas guzzler because to replace it with a smaller car was going to cost so much. I heard that someone had envied the couple in the 80 sq… Continue

Thoughts from the small farmers day at Otaki

A woman who sold fish waste and liquid blood and bone told me that her business is starting to thrive as chemical fertilisers get more expensive. I also talked to the assistant manager at our local Farmlands, asking what was happening. He told me of big price rises and the fact that their head office, where those decisions are being made, are making some changes to adjust. I suggested they stock more organic fertilisers but he said it was out of his hands. I passed him an invitation to our next… Continue

Hi Deirdre: I put my photo up. When I first signed on, I saw no option for me to load a photo - perhaps while my application was being considered?  Anyway, it is there now. Thanks for your kind words on my blog!

Season's Greetings Deidre - a couple of weeks before Xmas I sent you a lengthy message/request for information - but I haven't heard back from you. Should I be directing this request to someone else? (You may be away all this time of course).

Kind regards

Lynne Dempsey

thank you.  I am looking forward to getting involved.  I am at present in WA and have just finished setting up Aquaponics to show locals that it is possible to be partly sustainable in a small area.  urban sustainability is Possible.

Thanks for the welcome. BTW I'm only just starting to look into snails. A local woman here has started a business up and I thought about looking into it.

HI Dierdre! Thanks for your welcome and thanks too for telling me about the Christchurch Transition town group. It's very exciting to know there are others out there who are feeling the same way I am, and who are trying to get together to make some positive changes in the way they live their lives. All the best!

Thanks, and yes, I might change my name if it looks like I might use this site. I try to limit the amount of online information that links to me... I was interested by the potential for house exchange, that made me sign up....

I too have read your book and much enjoyed.

yes, I've read that the Ning network won't be free! what a shame!! - but, the only way we could possibly turn that around would be by showing our continued support!

Hello Deirdre,
I just wanted to send you some fan mail here as I really love your book 'Healthy Money, Healthy Planet' - I have to confess that I'm still trying to finish it (I come from a social science background, we don't cover a lot of economics or finance - although now I think we should!), but it's been a great journey so far. I'd love to order a few copies of your book for friends and family :) do you still have enough copies to sell 3 for $30?
Kind regards,
Emma
