The Christchurch Transition Forum is for everyone in the Canterbury area who is interested in Transition Towns and/or is member of a local initiative. We meet about every two months for a forum where we can network and exchange information in person.

Hey Doug... it's been a while since our paths crossed. Good to see you're still active and thoughtful as ever. I've been increasing my ecological footprint by raising two children (potentially active citizens I like to think).…

Kia Ora Grif, Have just had time to read the gaia U stuff. Looks interesting and a way of formalising the individual courses that the various Ecovillage Networks were running already at Findhorn, Steyrberg and the Farm. I like the emphasis on…

Profile Information

I found out about Transition Towns...
From a friend who told me
In the context of Transition Towns my interests / passions are:
Long term interest in sustainable communities including doctoral study on ecovillages and ecocities. The twin impacts of peak oil and climate change make the urgency of transitioning to a less consumptive and resilient society at household neighbourhood and regional levels imperative.
What are you happy to share about yourself:
I am a planner with a long standing interest in sustainability. When I lived in Nelson I was an activist in driving the local Agenda 21 process, chairing one working group, constructing a Green Plan for Nelson/Tasman and then with others forming the Nelson Bays Sustainable Living Trust. We initiated the now successful Environmental Expo in Nelson, assisted on the reestablishment of the local Community garden (Waimarama Comunity garden), did a warm homes project with the Council and EECA ,and submitted on more sustainable transport options for Nelson. A long term plan was for an Ecovillage in or near Nelson city but after protacted negotiations with the Council it fell through. This would have served as a living model of a more sustainable lifestyle and community living. Other activities I have been involved are waterway restoration and monitoring in West Auckland (the group I co-founded won a green Ribbon Award in 2002 for Urban Conservation) and much revegataion and tree planting. Some of this is ,I guess, a useful offset for my own carbon emitting activities (although I mostly ride a bike or use public transport) but also to increase local biodiversity, and local community participation. I believe strongly in assisting others to take responsiblity for their own local environments and begin to move towards more local co-management of community assets in cooperation with local authorities.
Where do you live (City or Town):
Christchurch

Hi Doug, I´d be stoked to hear your thoughts on the role of tertiary education in coming decades as we move into the post industrial paradigms, and a possible gaia university campus in nz. Gracias, Grifen

Hi Doug, It's great to see you here! Let me know if I can help you with your photo... cropping, sizing, adjusting contrast, fitting it to the site, etc. Then when I've returned it to you, you can post it to the site at Profile Photo. Photos become very important as our group grows.

It is a discipline I see as centrally important to sustainability. Be great to get some Transition town - or the like at the national planning conferences huh? All the best, Grifen
