I found out about Transition Towns...
Other
In the context of Transition Towns my interests / passions are:
Mobilsing the collective genius of our people to assert the fundamental human right and responsibility to self-determination. Time is pressing. Call it the meta project of our time, awakening to our lifes purpose, working through enlightened collectives, living consciously, accelerating transition, brining consciousness into the world of ego.
What are you happy to share about yourself:
I am a kiwi living in Chile for the time being, equipping myself with the tools to move people in transition. I am a student of Gaia university (coming soon to NZ) undertaking a masters in design, developing and implementing a whole region strtegy for my home of Biobio. In the last few months we have created a national institute of permaculture in Chile and a permaculture diploma system supporting students into lifelong learning pathways developing transition projects.
Where do you live (City or Town):

Kia Ora Grif,

Have just had time to read the gaia U stuff. Looks interesting and a way of formalising the individual courses that the various Ecovillage Networks were running already at Findhorn, Steyrberg and the Farm.
I like the emphasis on action-oriented learning -too much academic learning is sterile lectures and books and does not engage the heart and mind nor teach us much about earth ethics. I speak as one who taught in Universities and still gives the occasional lecture there on sustainable cities. I am connected with a Youth Environmental Forum here in Christchurch and the work done with them is much more hands on and directed by the students themselves.

I have been developing an idea of combining adventure tourism, social action and
earth centered sustainability education for the past few years. For an example go to
Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots Foundation. I believe that small teams of young people working together on projects, visiting more remote and so called resource poor areas and working alongside local people and communities, and seeing some of the issues first hand will influence them for life into being earth guardians or tohunga... At the moment it is haphazard as to how a young person may learn such things and link into the multitude of local and global organisations working on humanitarian, conservation and/or aid/development projects.

There is also a need to address how we can live here more sustainably in cities.
Perhaps a ROG programme in Aotearoa/Oceania can begin to address some of these issues. Any news from the Chile connection?

Thanks for your reply.
I don't think i am interested in starting any course at this moment. What i find appealing is your call for committed people to start the ROG in NZ

What are the costs involved for potential participants in this event?

Kind regards

An Invitation to join us in Chile
We are seeking to gather a pioneer group of talented and capable people with relevant experience to form two core organising groups for a new education and teaching paradigm, applying the Gaia University model as a foundation for an indigenous system in Chile, and in New Zealand / Australia. We are looking for; people committed to world change through practice that exemplifies the change they wish to see in the world and, social entrepreneurs passionate about the role of learning and change in the coming global transition.
We know it will be a big effort for you to travel to Chile, we will make it as easy as possible for you to join us!

Hi Grifen - nice to hear from you. Are you guys home yet?
I dont know much about Gaia University (I'll look it up eh?). Im a researcher with Massey University. Weirdly enough I went to a conference in Melbourne in late Nov that was looking at the role of Universities in social change (positive social change I should add!). I guess there is an abstract level, and a practical level.
My understanding is that Universities were supposed to be the social concious of society - independant of government and business and so therefore able to critique the greater society in which we live, and encourage critical thinking in those attending Universities. I think the pressure on Universities to make money, and the user pays and student loan etc system has eroded those aspects of Universities quite significantly (Im sure Im not saying anything you dont already know - sorry ;-). However, I like to think tertiary education in the future may go back to those original roots and be a catalyst for change in peoples lives, at all levels - personal, family, community and society. There is a small but active amount of people at all Universities who are moving in that direction too... However, they often seem in danger of 'down sizing' or 'responses to the education demand market' (I think of the closing of Unitec's permaculture department here). ;-(
Did you / are you in the process of getting a degree from Gaia U? How is it going?
Mandi
