"anyone in Christchurch need to borrow a bike trailer to transport your potting mix, pea straw, new garden tools, seedlings? They are a great way of carrying bulky gardening gear without using a car. You can try one for free and I can help you build…"

"Make sure parsley gets good morning sun and is in a good-sized pot (the roots need a fair bit of room). Also harvest the leaves from the outside of the plant first. Happy gardening :)"

Profile Information

In the context of Transition Towns my interests / passions are:
Peak oil. Climate change. Mass extinction. Deforestation. Toxins everywhere... need I say more? We've got to do something, and we have to do it fast! No more waiting for governments to catch on, no more waiting for business to make changes - TT is a way to start here and now to make get things moving - lead and the rest will (hopefully) follow.
What are you happy to share about yourself:
I started out in Germany with environmental law and planning, working mainly with transport and waste issues and doing some work on the phasing out of nuclear. Slow and hard work trying to achieve something meaningful. Then came to NZ and turned to consulting - with my interest on sustainable business practices. Again - slow and hard trying to re-educate people to see beyond the $$. Took a breather to mother my two wonderful boys (3 yrs and 10 mths) and focus on "home organics"... one does try to create the best possible start for the kids. Suppose now it's time to go on and try to save a piece of the world for them.. Grassroots is my next approach, hopefully less slow - surely hard work as well ;-). Oh, also into Steiner education.
Where do you live (City or Town):
Lower Hutt

Transition Towns presentation

Transition Towns presentation_V5.pptHere's a generic version of a presentation we did to the United Nations Association of New Zealand on Sunday. It is quite comprehensive. Complete with notes pages. Maybe people find it useful.

The actual UNA presentation can be found on transitiontowns.org under Lower Hutt / past events.

Enjoy!

News from overseas

Ok, so i did it - got onto those planes and thus blew all possible attemps to reduce my carbon footprint for years to come. I have no excuse...

But now I am here, spending some nice late summer days with my friends and family and intensely hoping that whole aviation thing is going to hold up until I safely made it back home. How terrible.

However, I am getting the chance to make some observations as to the state of the rest of the world... and I thought I might as well… Continue

The spiritual side...

My friend Juanita pointed out to me in the car yesterday, that she felt there is an "above average" ratio of "spiritual" people involved in TT. She also mentioned how she went through a phase of intense "spiritual development" herself before picking up on the Peak Oil issue. She felt there was a reason for that - her inner journey preceding this time, giving her the strength and optimism necessary to not throw her hands in the air and surrender to the feeling of hopelessness.

I feel… Continue

In the closet...

Ha! Watched "Escape from Suburbia" the other day... Whilst again being slightly too American for me, I thought the gay guy towards the end hit the nail on the head: He likens knowing about Peak Oil to "being gay and in the closet - you don't want to talk about it to your friends so they don't think you're weird. You don't want to talk to your family so you don' t upset them. And you don't want to talk about it at work, because you don't want to be singled out". Very much how I feel... Somewhat… Continue

Hanging out for it...

Lots and lots of things come to mind when you think about Peak Oil... economic, social, environmental. You begin going through scenarios in your head and work through the entire spectrum from grief to anger to fear and so on - I'm sure most people here are familiar with this. However, the more I talk about it to people, especially those who have been "aware" on some level or another for a while - the more the response seems to be more of a sense of excitement, a "bring it on" - even "go on,… Continue

Peak Oil nowhere near

Just read an article on a German website by a banking / sharemarket oil expert (Eugen Weinberg of Commerzbank, Germany -http://boerse.ard.de/content.jsp?go=meldung&key=dokument_287200 – is in German, though) . Here’s a short summary:

* A global peak of oil production is nowhere in sight

* Russia hasn’t peaked, but production is stagnating merely due to a lack of investments

* The recent discovery of a giant oil field off shore Brazil (est 33 billion barrels) will… Continue

Hi Natalie, I´d be stoked to hear your thoughts on the role of tertiary education in coming decades as we move into the post industrial paradigms, and a possible gaia university campus in nz. Gracias, Grifen

Hi Natalie, what a fantastic weekend, wasn't it? Andrew is planning on doing something regularly and I so look forward to that. Please email me on eckman@xtra.co.nz regarding the intentional community. I'm keeping track of all interested parties and their email addresses. No promises to send regular emails but at least I'll be able to be in communication to let you know how best to keep in touch with us. cheers, Leanne
