I found out about Transition Towns...
From a friend who told me
In the context of Transition Towns my interests / passions are:
Super(local)markets.... block by block urban versions of the farmers markets. I grow spinach, tamarillos, silverbeet, rosemary, mint, potatoes, rhubarb. What does my neighbour grow? Could 40 or so households in my block grow enough primary produce to share and barter every week? Would the process encourage all sorts of other community growth? It would certainly be eating green ! Less carbon footprint for that greenpepper you want to add to your dinner. Possibly less cost for your vege needs if the barter system works.
What are you happy to share about yourself:
A mum of one with an interest in growing communities on a super local level. Who are the people in my neighbourhood? What do they grow in their gardens?
Where do you live (City or Town):
kingsland, auckland

Thoughts on alternatives to Community Gardens - Home gardens and SUPER(local)MARKETS

I wonder if an answer is to combine the community and home garden aspects in a "Super(local)market".... block by block urban homegarden versions of the farmers markets but focusing on barter, with any commerce as an extra.

Hi Bryrony,

Sorry for this very l.ate reply. We'd love to have you come along to our TT meeting and be involved int eh Kingsland / Sandringham group. We have meeting at 12B Royal Terrace, Kingsland on 2nd Feb at 7:30 and will be organising a grafting workshop and other activities for the beginning of the year. We are also planning planting fruit trees in community spaces.

Re your question of growing food in your block, its a great idea. Last weekend I saw the very same example at a retirement village in Henderson. They had resident and communal planting spaces, a large worm farm were all food scraps went, collected water from the roof to water plants etc.

So, again, we'd love to have you along to join in. Call me on 021 229 0329 or just turn up.

Hi there, something I am working on is called the '100 Mile Diet' - there is a book with the same name. It is an initiative to encourage local eating and your idea combines really well to help achieve the goal of eating primarliy within 100 miles.

Look forward to meeting you :)

Hi Petal2000, It's great to see you here! Let me know if I can help you with your photo... cropping, sizing, adjusting contrast, fitting it to the site, etc. Then when I've returned it to you, you can post it to the site at Profile Photo. Photos become very important as our group grows.

Welcome Petal. Enjoy the network and may that dream come true. Local currencies will help. What about starting one by joining the local currencies group here? Photo?
