Hi Rodger, I'm writing to you from Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland. A gorgeous spring day here, calm, sunny and warm. I'm currently 'in between paid jobs' recovering from burn-out but do voluntary work helping with reading recovery at the High School and organising the Transition Towns workshops for the Eco Show in Taupo in October. cheers, glenda

Burnout is a concept I have been working with for 30 years. As best I can understand, burnout results from reaching the end of your tolerance for doing the same thing. I call this period of time the person's "alarm clock." The peaks I have found from interviewing thousands of folks is 1-4 years (about 35% of folks), 5-7 years (65%), and 15-25 years (5%).

My own personal clock is 1 year. Every year I have to be doing something different. I continue working with the profiling system I developed in 1979-80, but each year I'm doing something new with it. In the last 8 years I have concentrated on work with children with developmental problems and each year I concentrate on work with different populations within that group. Last year I worked a lot with autistic and failure to thrive children. This year I have many young people (high school and university students) with hyperactivity, inability to focus, and dyslexia.

Based on my description, what do you think your clock is? If you look at your work history, what cycles do you have in changing what you are doing?

I've been interested in the Transition movement since I discovered it last year. I was interested in that outcome for decades, and last year I discovered that there were many more folks who are working toward this outcome.

How big are the Transition Town Workshops and what kinds of topics are covered there? My wife and I are considering offering a series of workshops for the transition movement in the Americas about dealing with sensitivities and intolerances brought on by environmental factors and building the best teams: the human side of organizational structure.

Thanks for your welcome. I have been interested in the theme behind "transition." But, I have only now discovered that it had a name of "transition."

I'm interested in alternatives of all kinds (technology, power, heat, health, etc. . .).
