From oil dependence to local resilience

Really local information site - Placerama.com

I've recently launched a new site for really local information, http://placerama.com. The site is built and maintained in Christchurch but can be used globally to find really local information contributed by the people around you. The aim is to encourage people to live more locally by providing (or linking to) the best source of information on what is happening immediately around you.

The content you see is ranked based on distance from you, how current it is and how popular it is (based on your votes). You can only contribute listings and votes on listings within 100 km of your primary location so all content is truly local to you.

You can contribute anything you like as long as it has a location:

  • A notice about a lost cat
  • Information about a local event, e.g., a school fundraiser, a neighbourhood BBQ
  • A link to an external news item
  • A link to your transition town group meetings
  • A question about something that happened in your neighbourhood

Placerama is not intended to replace existing hyperlocal sites but can be used to enhance the visibility of these sites to the wider community.

If anyone has any feedback on Placerama, I'd love to hear it.
